Hiring is expensive. Losing employees and needing to rehire quickly is even more expensive. But what about training high-potential employees? For many small businesses in Ontario, employee training is not even considered part of the budget, yet it’s often one of the most cost-effective ways to improve performance, meet new skill requirements, and reduce turnover.
If you’re an Ontario employer, you may not have to pay full price for training. The Ontario Job Grant 2026 is a government-funded program that can cover a significant portion of your employee training costs.
We’ll break down exactly how the Ontario Job Grant works in 2026, who qualifies, what training is eligible, and how H2R Business Solutions can help you identify the right training program for your grant.
What is the Ontario Job Grant 2026?
The Ontario Job Grant (OJG) is a provincial program providing grants to Ontario employers for workforce training. The grant, which can go up to $15,000 per employee, will help businesses across Ontario invest further in internal skill development.
What makes the OJG different from other programs is that employers choose the training. You decide who gets trained, what skills they develop, and which provider delivers the program (as long as the provider is an eligible third party). The government then covers a portion of the cost.
How much does the Ontario Job Grant cover?
The amount you can receive depends on the size of your business and the job experience of those you’re training:
| Employer Size | Max Funding Per Trainee | Employer Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| 100+ employees | Up to $10,000 | 50% of training costs |
| Fewer than 100 employees | Up to $10,000 | As little as 1/6 of training costs |
| Fewer than 100 employees — training previously unemployed new hires | Up to $15,000 | No minimum — up to 100% funded |
Who is eligible for the Ontario Job Grant?
The Ontario Job Grant 2026 is open to private-sector and non-profit employers who meet the following criteria:
- Have a physical location in Ontario
- Have been operating at that location for at least one year
- Are not a government body or broader public sector organization
- Are training 25 or fewer participants per application (current intake limit)
- Are in compliance with Ontario employment and health and safety legislation
Trainees must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons living in Ontario, legally authorized to work in Canada, and employed by the applying organization.
What employee training is eligible for the Ontario Job Grant?
For the 2026 Ontario Job Grant, training must be delivered by an approved third-party provider, not by the employer internally.
Approved third-party providers must have been delivering that type of training for at least two years and have a physical presence in Ontario.
Eligible training categories include:
- Leadership and management development — building the skills your managers and supervisors need to lead effectively
- Compliance training — workplace health and safety, HR compliance, and related regulatory requirements
- Employee skills upgrading — improving the capabilities of existing team members in their current or new roles
- Onboarding and role-specific training for new hires — particularly valuable for small employers hiring previously unemployed individuals
Training must be completed within 52 weeks of the start date, and it cannot be training the employer is legally required to provide.
Additionally, vendors can’t use the grant to train your employees on how to use their own software or product.
What training is NOT eligible for the Ontario Job Grant?
Here’s a short overview of what the grant won’t cover:
- Training the employer is legally required to provide under existing law
- Vendor-delivered training on how to use their own product or service
- Executive preparatory programs (MBA, CFA, GMAT, LSAT, etc.)
- Conferences, memberships, or subscription fees
- Business consulting services
- Training that lasts longer than one year
- Training for business owners or controlling shareholders

Why Ontario Employers Should Take Advantage of the Ontario Job Grant
Many organizations are operating in a period of rapid change, where evolving technology, shifting job requirements, and emerging skills gaps make ongoing upskilling essential for long-term success.
Here’s how Ontario employers benefit from the 2026 Ontario Job Grant:
- Dramatically reduce your training costs: The government covers the majority of eligible training expenses, meaning you can access professional, third-party training for a fraction of what you’d normally pay. Smaller employers hiring previously unemployed staff may not have to pay for anything at all.
- Retain your best people: Employees who have meaningful development opportunities are more likely to stay. The OJG lets you offer that investment without bearing the full financial burden yourself.
- Improve team performance without adding headcount: Upskilling your existing workforce is faster and more cost-effective than hiring. The grant makes it even easier to close skill gaps, raise performance across your team, and save money.
- Stay competitive: The skills your team needs today are not the same as five years ago. The OJG gives Ontario businesses a practical way to keep pace without stretching their budgets.
- Access funding with no strings attached: There are no long-term contracts or complicated obligations. Employers apply, complete the training, and receive the funding.
How to Apply for the Ontario Job Grant 2026
- Identify your trainees and training goals — Know who you want to train and what outcomes you’re targeting
- Select an eligible third-party provider — Such as H2R, whose programs are designed to meet OJG requirements
- Submit your application online — Applications are accepted year-round at the Employment Ontario portal
- Work with your assigned Employment and Training Consultant — They’ll be your government contact throughout the process
Note: Employers may only submit one OJG application at a time, and the current intake is limited to applications involving 25 or fewer trainees.
FAQ
Can I apply for the Ontario Job Grant for multiple employees at once?
Yes. A single application can cover multiple trainees, as long as you’re training 25 or fewer participants. All trainees on the same application must be enrolled in the same training program.
Does the training have to be the same for every employee on my application?
Yes — each application is tied to a single training program. If you want to send different employees to different training, you’ll need to wait until your current application is closed before submitting a new one.
What counts as a "previously unemployed" new hire for the higher funding amount?
A previously unemployed individual is someone who was not employed at the time they were hired by your organization. If you’re a smaller employer bringing on staff from this group, you may qualify for up to $15,000 per trainee with no minimum employer contribution — making it one of the most valuable scenarios under the grant.
Can non-profit organizations apply?
Yes. Non-profit organizations with a physical location in Ontario that have been operating for at least one year are eligible, as long as they are not part of the broader public sector (such as hospitals, school boards, or colleges).
What happens if my training costs more than the grant covers?
The grant covers up to the maximum per-trainee amount — anything above that is the employer’s responsibility. You can still proceed with training that exceeds the grant ceiling; you simply pay the difference out of pocket.
Is there a limit to how many times I can apply?
There is no lifetime cap on the number of times an employer can apply. However, priority consideration may be given to employers who have not received OJG funding in the past six months.
